The Sacrament of Holy Unction was performed at the Miami Cathedral
March 8, 2026On March 8, during the second Sunday of Great Lent, the Sacrament of Holy Unction was celebrated at St. Matrona Cathedral in Miami (Florida).
The service was led by the Vicar of the Slavic Vicariate and rector of the cathedral, Archimandrite Alexander (Belya), Bishop-elect of Niсopolis.
Concelebrating with him were: Archpriest Eduard Chervinskiy, cleric of the Vicariate; Archpriest Vasyl Babych, rector of the Icon of the Mother of God “Life-Giving Spring” church in Hot Springs (Arkansas); Archpriest Rostislav Zadorozhnyy, rector of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker church in Red Bank (New Jersey); Archpriest Aleksandar Bozhinov, cleric of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker Monastery in Fort Myers (Florida); Archpriest Maksim Pliskou and Archpriest Ivan Zeikan, clerics of the cathedral.
The Sacrament of Holy Unction is traditionally performed in the cathedral during Great Lent, reminding the faithful of the words of the Apostle James: “Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord” (James 5:14).
Following the Sacrament, Archimandrite Alexander addressed those gathered with a sermon on the significance of Holy Unction in the life of a Christian.
