Archbishop Elpidophoros Visited the Main Cathedral and Residence of the Slavic Vicariate

January 8, 2026

On January 7, the head of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, Archbishop Elpidophoros, visited the main church of the Slavic Orthodox Vicariate of America — the Cathedral of Saint Matrona of Moscow in Miami, Florida.

At the Vicariate residence, His Eminence met with the Vicar of the Slavic Vicariate — Archimandrite Alexander (Belya), Bishop-elect of Niсopolis.

During the conversation, Archimandrite Alexander reported on the work accomplished and the achievements in the development of the Vicariate during 2025, and also shared plans for the year ahead, particularly regarding the opening of new parishes. Archbishop Elpidophoros was presented with the Slavic Vicariate’s 2026 calendar. In turn, Fr. Alexander expressed sincere gratitude to His Eminence Elpidophoros for his wise leadership, fatherly care, and constant support in the development of the Vicariate.

Following the meeting, Archbishop Elpidophoros, accompanied by Archimandrite Alexander, toured the Cathedral of Saint Matrona of Moscow. His Eminence paid special attention to the faience iconostasis. The Vicar explained that the icons for it are being painted in strict accordance with the Byzantine canon. To date, four images have already been installed: the Lord Pantocrator, the Theotokos, as well as icons of the Feasts of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross and the Meeting of the Lord (Presentation). Most of the remaining icons have already been painted, and their installation is planned for the feast of Pascha.

Archbishop Elpidophoros highly commended what he saw, thanked Archimandrite Alexander for his dedicated labors, and blessed him for continued success in his ministry.

It is especially joyful that the visit of the Head of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America took place on the very day when the Slavic Vicariate celebrates the great and radiant Feast of the Nativity of Christ.
